Every year we host a Holiday Party at Bright Pearl, unfortunately the restaurant has closed down. I wanted to keep the tradition live, and have found a small private room at an Indian Restaurant. This room can only accommodate only 15, and I think it is a good number, as it will provide each person to share their 2012 projects.

Venue: Chef of India Restaurant, 1415 Yonge St. (at St. Clair Ave. W), Toronto, ON

Menu: All you can eat from a Buffet of three dozen items: meat & vegetarians, spicy and non-spicy food and of course the Indian tandoori Nan & chicken.

Summerlicious Lunch with SIP: July 12, 2011
Every year we participate in the Toronto's Summerlicious program and use the excuse to renew networking in an intimate environment and meet some members, advisory panel and volunteers. This year lucky 13 met at the exquisite ROM's restaurant, c5 Restaurant & Lounge, located at the pinnacle of the new Michael Lee-Chin Crystal.

SIP Members Enjoy "Level 5" Service and Socializing at Summerlicious 2011!

The Society of Internet Professionals held its annual Summerlicious Lunch Meeting at c5 Restaurant & Lounge at the Royal Ontario Museum this past summer on July 12, 2011. SIPpers were treated to an epicurean three-course lunch featuring a choice of upscale fare.

I went with the Arugula & Strawberry Salad to start and the Lake Erie Whitefish for my main course. The desserts were tempting to say the least — Summer Berry Shortcake, Chocolate Mousse Cake and Panna Cotta — but didn’t exactly suit my gluten/dairy-free diet. Luckily, Manager Scott Sawyer and his staff were more than accommodating, and I was served up an eclectic mix of gourmet sorbet featuring exotic flavours such as Apple/Fennel — the perfect finish to the perfect light summer’s lunch on a hot Toronto day.

If you’ve never been to c5, it’s worthwhile to check it out, if for no other reason than the vaulted ceilings (top floor of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, hence the name) and contemporary look definitely give the place an open and futuristic vibe. In many ways it was the perfect setting for SIP, always looking to the future of online technology and the impact the Internet continues to have on businesses and professionals from all walks of life. Speaking of which, the eclectic mix of SIPpers at my table made this year’s Summerlicious event a truly memorable one — not least for the leads it produced.

I’m looking forward to next year’s Summerlicious, and all the truly enjoyable and valuable SIP events between now and then.

Search Engine Strategies. The very term suggests a paradox. Surely, the concept of a search engine is to assist people in finding information online—including organizations and their products, services, people, etc. Of course, as Internet Professionals we are all too familiar with the truism that what sounds great in theory rarely works as well in practice. The fact is, the sheer scale and scope of the worldwide web makes being found a challenge, search engines notwithstanding. Without taking certain measures, it is very likely a website will never find itself on the coveted “first page” of a search engine’s results, and more than likely will be buried on page two, three…thirty of a Google search result. As it turns out, the measures that can be taken to improve one’s ranking on a search engine are as varied as the technologies used to encode the web itself. Herein lays the rationale for a conference and expo that intends to enlighten Internet Professionals on the latest search engine strategies: bring together Internet Professionals and organizations to exchange knowledge and experience about how to be found online.

We use the term "Internet Professionals" because honestly, what businessperson, non-profit leader or government official does not rely on the Internet? Gone are the days when the Society of Internet Professional’s members consisted solely of engineers, programmers and cutting edge webpreneurs. Now, its members come from every walk of life—from social activists and lawyers to innumerable business owners, managers and consultants. The common connecting link between them is a desire to be "more professional" (efficient and effective in their professional life) by virtue of understanding—or networking with others who understand—all the risks/benefits of using the Internet. So, as far as the Society of Internet Professionals is concerned, everyone who attended this year’s SES Conference and Expo was already one of us. Maybe that’s why so many showed interest and became members of our non-for-profit Professional Association on the spot. Clearly, Internet Professionals recognize the need to network with one another in a technological context if they hope to keep on top of the latest trends and best practices in their profession/industry—regardless of what that may be.

In the context of a conference whose intention was to give Internet Professionals a chance to network, promote, educate and be educated by like-minded Internet Professionals, we can say only positive things about the 2011 SES Show. As to what they were sharing with each other? We would need our own web server and wiki-platform to attempt to encapsulate all the brilliant cutting-edge online content creation, management, dissemination tactics, technologies and packaged services being offered by companies. In a nutshell, it’s the strategic crafting of content fed into various online channels—especially the social media phenomenon—that generates positive effects driving traffic—increased search engine ranking first and foremost them. But we would be remiss not to mention the amicable atmosphere and friendliness of everyone at the show. Clearly, Internet Professionals are not only like-minded, they are like-hearted. They seem eager to openly share with one another the highs and lows of their professional experiences, and even their personal feelings on particular "eccentric behaviours of technology."

In summary, then, the 2011 SES Conference and Expo was an "in-person microcosm" of what the Society of Internet Professionals is all about. A friendly atmosphere where like-minded professionals from all walks of life come together to socialize, network, connect, share knowledge and experience, etc. At the end of the day, everyone gets something positive from a gathering of Internet Professionals such as the 2011 SES Show. This is why the Society of Internet Professional will never be too far from any such gathering in the GTA.

Having your own personal website reflects that you are both professional and serious about your profession or your services. If you have your own domain name then you can start using your own email address based on that domain name e.g. name@yourdomainname.com. Using an email address under your domain provides you with a permanent email address independent of Internet Service Provider (ISP). If you are using an email address assigned by your ISP, such as name@rogers.com or name@sympatico.ca then think what will happen when you terminate the service! But you don’t have to worry about canceling or changing your ISP service if you are using the email address based on your own domain.

His Talk: Five years ago, Hendley wrote an article called "Seeing Through the e-Book Threat" for Canadian Printer magazine, that largely dismissed the electronic book format. Once again, a terrific holiday dinner for SIP in conjunction with Life Transformation Institute was held at the Bright Pearl, a historic landmark of Toronto on November 24, 2009.

Over 40 people enjoyed a seven-course meal along with the opportunity to win some wonderful door prizes.

A stimulating and fun Speakers’ Contest made the evening even more entertaining with all of the participants getting public acknowledgment for their speaking endeavors and talents.

But, this heartwarming event would not have happened without the hardworking efforts of the great volunteers.

Today, the first day of the SES TO is almost over. There are some highlights of the day at the SIP double booth transformed into the Magic Cafe:

[ V ] A lot of people were so interested in how SIP can help them to improve the presence of their businesses on the Google search;
[ V ] It was a day of immense networking possibilities and establishing new partnerships;

Certify Me – Two Emerging SEO Certification Programs

Two emerging initiatives aim to create and present certification designations for search engine optimization specialists. Oddly enough, both are from Southern Ontario, Canada both are being initiated by long term players in the online marketing world, and neither has sanction from any official bodies, other than their own boards of directors.

If the situation sounds confusing and ad-hoc, that’s because it is. There is no official governing board for search engine optimization practitioners. In other words, SEO is not a profession by any extent of the word. It is a practice. There is no regulation, other than the vocal self-policing that happens within the industry and no bureau of complaints and compliance, other than the search engines themselves.

From a business and consumer’s point of view, the lack of professional oversight or certification in the search engine optimization field can present problems when deciding with whom to risk advertising dollars. Again, there is no overarching better business bureau or best practices council for consumers to file complaints with. Without an industry-wide certification program, the only protection consumers can expect comes from the due-diligence process they exercise themselves.

The Society of Internet Professionals wants to change that. Formed as a non-profit society in 1997, the Society of Internet Professionals (SIP) sees itself as one of the few entities capable of offering a professional certification for SEOs. They took sole responsibility for the certification for Internet Professionals in 2003 when the Association of Web Professionals ceased operation, though they have been offering an accreditation program, Accredited Internet Professional (AIP), since 1999.

Since that time, the number of specialization streams under which SIP offers accreditation has grown to include, Web Technology, Web Design, Web Management, Web Development, Internet Privacy, e-Business, e-Learning, and SEO.

According to SIP president and founder Max Haroon, “AIP is the accreditation of Internet professional’s qualification and experience. AIP are professionals practicing in the Internet sector whose qualifications, experience and professionalism have been assessed by SIP.” Expanding certification into the SEO sector is a natural move for SIP, says Haroon.

In order to qualify for an AIP in SEO, a practitioner must first become a member of SIP. They must then conduct a three step assessment program, the first step being a free online self-assessment. After taking the online assessment test, applicants must then pass a SIP Core Examination which challenges the writer’s mastery of general Internet competencies. Lastly applicants must take a more difficult test covering the specific AIP certification stream they are interested in.

The certification process is rigorous. Taking the two competency tests is one thing. Passing them with a grade of 75% or higher is another. If the applicant passes both competency tests, he or she will also need to provide references from employers, peers and friends, and agree to abide by SIP’s code of ethics.

For more information on becoming a member of the Society of Internet Professionals, or on achieving SIP accreditation, visit their website at http://www.sipgroup.org.

A second certification initiative will soon be launched if Terry Van Horne (Webmaster T) from SEOPros.org has his way. SEOPros.org is also a registered non-profit society based in Southern Ontario. Founded as a directory of vetted and approved ethical SEO and SEM firms, SEOPros wants to bring a standard of best practices to the industry by offering an online training and evaluation course covering SEO Best Practices and Techniques.

The SEOPros initiative differs from SIP’s in that direct instruction is offered to participants in a highly focused online classroom setting. As SEOPros promises one-on-one instruction, it limits its classes to a maximum of 20 participants.

Participants benefit from instruction offered by some of the most well known and trusted names in the SEO industry including Van Horne, Dan Thies, Scotty Claiborne and CJ Newton. SEOPros guarantees participants at least one hour of private conversation with an instructor for personalized, one-on-one lessons.

According to the SEOPros certification documents, “If you have heard of "boot camps" for MCSE, then you know what to expect!”

The SEOPros course covers the following areas, Web Development and Conversion Strategies, Understanding SERPs and HTML Optimization, and Submission and Link Building Strategies. Participants who successfully navigate their way through the intense learning sessions are invited to take a final exam which, if passed leads to SEOPro “Best Practices Certification” and membership in the (best practices exclusive) SEOPros directory. For more information on the SEOPros Best Practices certification, please visit the SEOPros website.

Both the Society of Internet Professionals and SEOPros recognize they have common goals and have indicated a willingness to work with each other in the future. It is interesting to note that both initiatives began independently of each other but are located within 50 kilometres of each other.

The need for a professional designation or best practice certification for SEOs is obvious. The method for creating, marketing and distributing these certificates is not. Each of the initiatives would have more strength if backed by one of the known SEO/SEM industry associations such as SEMPO or the emerging Search Marketing Association of North America.

Events Logistic Coordinators: assisting in running the event for audio-video equipment, refreshments and registration desk. Taking photos and videos.

SIP Internet Job Board: This is a semi-volunteering job, we need a person to market job posting to employers and recruitment companies. We charge $200 per posting and the coordinator will get a part of the fee charged.

Event Description

Speaker: Vanessa Peters
This month's speaker will be Vanessa Peters, Ph.D. candidate at OISE, talking about the application of wikis in Education.

In this meeting I will discuss a new wiki-based scripted activity that was created for secondary school biology students. Using a co-design method, the researchers collaborated with two experienced science teachers to create a curriculum unit where 114 grade-ten biology students developed a knowledge base of ideas about human physiology, then drew upon those ideas as resources for subsequent curricular activities. Results demonstrate that this innovative lesson fostered collaborative knowledge construction as well as individual student learning. This suggests that a carefully designed wiki-based activity can complement and enhance the value of a collective knowledge building community within secondary school settings.

Thank you so much for staffing the SIP's booth at the it360º Show.

At the end of the it360º show someone asked me, "Was it a success for SIP"?

Success is a multifaceted for me:
Signing for membership or SIPpost
Collecting so many business cards
Meeting volunteers
Meeting some old acquaintances
Meeting people who are on our mailing list, "Max I get your SIPpost" (understandable, we have 10,000 subscribers of the SIPpost and I do not know all of them!)
Discussing with some companies for membership, speaking or job board.
Love to hear your experience and your success stories. Did you have fun?

Now the hard work begins - follow ups, we need to scan the cards and send emails to all visitors of our booth and others we met.

A short meeting is planned to do a follow-up work from the show at Ooh-La-La, CBC Atrium, 250 Front Street West (across the road from Toronto Metro Convention Centre) at 3 pm on Friday April 18, 2008. We should finish by 4 pm.

Please make a special effort to get together with our small group of volunteers and some members of panel of experts. Your rsvp will be highly appreciated.

Some of you know that I am very much interested in holistic treatment and connection of mind to body for healthy living. I have found their goal are very similar to my passion.

What a coincidence! The Toronto techweek.to is coming on May 28 to June 1, 2007; mesh conference is being held in Toronto on May 30th & 31st; and Google is hosting ten Google Developer Days in their various offices around the world on 31 May.

At least we can watch live streaming webcasts from Google's Mountain View office. But who knows, maybe next year we will broadcast our own streaming webcast from Google Canada's BCE Place office?

The Society of Internet Professionals (SIP) has launched an Internet Job Board. The Internet jobs are no longer related to only website jobs but have overlapped with IT and telecommunication industries as more and more business and consumer applications are being delivered over the Internet platform.

SIP invites members and non-members to post their job requirements or post their resumes at no charge for an initial period of two months (ending May 1, 2007).
All postings will be eligible for a draw to win an “Internet books package” (value approximately $500, see postscript below).

In addition to the free posting, SIP will assist its members in other ways, such as:

[+] Providing resources for skills upgrading

Like every year, we are getting together at our annual seasonal holiday dinner.
Come and network with SIP's members, enthusiastic volunteers and some new faces, we call them SIPpers.

Creating & Marketing e-Books, Blogs, and Digital Content

This one-day workshop will take you by hand through the cycle of writing and publishing E-Books.
Presenters:
Chris Van Buren, an established author, who wrote pioneering book on creating E-Book, will take attendees through the cycle of writing, publishing and promoting eBooks and other digital products.
Annie Jennings, a leading American publicist for authors, will explore different strategies for public relations, promotion and marketing of self-published books. Attendees will learn how to leverage Internet resources such as websites, blogging, social networking sites and email campaigns to promote themselves and their writing.
The workshop will conclude with a panel of self-published authors discussing their success stories. There will also be group projects, critiques and brainstorming sessions.
